Pearl Jam's Vs Turns 25
After the massive success of their debut album 'Ten' and what were soon to be anthems of rock music in 'Alive', 'Even Flow', and 'Jeremy'. Many music lovers were awaiting what Pearl Jam will come up with next? With their grunge contemporary Nirvana releasing their 3rd studio album 'In Utero' a month earlier to critical and commercial success, selling over 200,000 copies in 2 weeks. Pearl Jam's next album had something to prove.
Pearl Jam had debut 'Animal' from the upcoming album at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 02, 1993. While Pearl Jam had already decided not to make any more music videos. The performance of 'Animal' had been played on MTV and was sort of a de facto music video. There was no official lead single leading up to the release of 'Vs', as 'Go' was released a week after.
On October 19, 1993, 'Vs' was released to critical and massive commercial success. Selling a then record debut week sales of 950,000 copies. Debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts. And staying there for 5 straight weeks. While not matching 'Ten' in terms of sales. 13x platinum for 'Ten' and 7x platinum for 'Vs' according to the RIAA. It proved they had a long successful future of great music ahead.
